UCLan Cyprus may at first appear like a young university with under 5 years of operations under its belt. However, it can easily be said that the Law School is advancing, providing the students and everyone involved with wonderful opportunities for growth and progress. 7th April, 2016 marked a very important date, launching UCLan’s first ever Model United Nations (MUN) in collaboration with the United Nations Association of Cyprus. UCLan welcomed very special guests, Mr. Nicos Rolandis, the former Foreign Minister of Cyprus, Dr. Christos A. Theodoulou, the President of the United Nations Association of Cyprus and Vice-President of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) and Mr. Christophoros Yiangou, formerly a Cypriot ambassador representing Cyprus abroad.

Addressing the draft resolution on Protection of migrants, Dr. Christos A. Theodoulou, quoting the Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, stated,

 “International Law has stipulated the right of refugees to protection and asylum. States must judicially examine the applications for asylum. It is not only a matter of international law, it is also our duty as human beings. … In addition to upholding responsibilities, the international community must also show greater determination in resolving conflicts and other problems that leave people little choice but to flee.”

The students were each representing a UN country and their speeches addressed the draft resolution. Preparation for the MUN, entailed research of foreign countries for the student representatives, including the history and political views with regard to the subject of the draft resolution. The focus was of this MUN was the seriousness of the refugee crisis and the measures that should be taken both locally and globally, in order to address it.

Following the speeches, the student representatives were given the opportunity to propose amendments and then vote for the amendments and the resolution as a whole. The conference was concluded with a pleasant reception where the students had the opportunity to discuss the MUN proceedings among themselves, as well as speak to the guests, exchange views and knowledge.

Το UCLAN Cyprus εκ πρώτης όψεως φαίνεται ως ένα νεοσύστατο Πανεπιστήμιο, με μόλις 5 χρόνια λειτουργίας.  Ωστόσο είναι προφανές πως η Νομική Σχολή εξελίσσεται, παρέχοντας στους φοιτητές και όλους όσους συνεργάζονται με αυτή εξαιρετικές ευκαιρίες για ανάπτυξη και πρόοδο.  Η 7η Απριλίου 2016 αποτελεί μια πολύ σημαντική μέρα, καθώς πραγματοποιήθηκε το πρώτο Μοντέλο προσομοίωσης Ηνωμένων Εθνών (Model United Nations) σε συνεργασία με το Σύνδεσμο Ηνωμένων Εθνών Κύπρου.  Το UCLan Cyprus υποδέχθηκε πολύ εκλεκτούς καλεσμένους, τον κ. Νίκο Ρολάνδη, πρώην Υπουργό Εξωτερικών της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, τον Δρα. Χρίστο Α. Θεοδούλου, πρόεδρο του Συνδέσμου Ηνωμένων Εθνών Κύπρου και αντιπρόεδρο της Παγκόσμιας Ομοσπονδίας των Συνδέσμων Ηνωμένων Εθνών (WFUNA) και τον κ. Χριστόφορο Γιάγκου, πρώην πρέσβη της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας στο εξωτερικό.

Σχολιάζοντας το σχέδιο ψηφίσματος για την Προστασία των μεταναστών, ο Δρ. Χρίστος Α. Θεοδούλου, επικαλούμενος τον Γενικό Γραμματέα Μπαν Κι-μουν, δήλωσε:

“Το Διεθνές Δίκαιο καθόρισε το δικαίωμα των μεταναστών για προστασία και άσυλο.  Οι χώρες πρέπει να εξετάζουν δικαστικώς τις αιτήσεις για άσυλο.  Δεν είναι μόνο ζήτημα διεθνούς δικαίου, αλλά και καθήκον μας ως άνθρωποι… Πέρα από την ανάληψη ευθυνών, η διεθνής κοινότητα πρέπει να δείξει μεγαλύτερη αποφασιστικότητα στο να επιλύει συγκρούσεις και άλλα προβλήματα που δεν αφήνουν στους ανθρώπους άλλη επιλογή από τη φυγή”.

Κάθε φοιτητής εκπροσωπούσε ένα κράτος-μέλος των Ηνωμένων Εθνών, σχολιάζοντας στην ομιλία του το σχέδιο ψηφίσματος.  Η προετοιμασία για το MUN περιελάμβανε έρευνα από τους φοιτητές για τις ξένες χώρες που εκπροσωπούσαν, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της ιστορίας και των πολιτικών θέσεων των χωρών σχετικά με το θέμα του σχεδίου ψηφίσματος.  Δόθηκε έμφαση στη σοβαρότητα του προσφυγικού προβλήματος και στα μέτρα που έχουν ληφθεί και πρέπει να ληφθούν τόσο τοπικά όσο και παγκόσμια για την επίλυση του.

Μετά την ολοκλήρωση των ομιλιών τους, οι φοιτητές-εκπρόσωποι είχαν την ευκαιρία να προτείνουν τροποποιήσεις και έπειτα να ψηφίσουν για τις τροποποιήσεις και το ολοκληρομένο ψήφισμα.  Η εκδήλωση ολοκληρώθηκε με δεξίωση, όπου οι φοιτητές είχαν την ευκαιρία να συζητήσουν μεταξύ τους για το MUN, να μιλήσουν με τους καλεσμένους και να ανταλλάξουν απόψεις και γνώσεις.
