UCLan Cyprus may at first appear like a young university with under 5 years of operations under its belt. However, it can easily be said that the Law School is advancing, providing the students and everyone involved with wonderful opportunities for growth and progress. 7th April, 2016 marked a very important date, launching UCLan\u2019s first ever Model United Nations (MUN) in collaboration with the United Nations Association of Cyprus. UCLan welcomed very special guests, Mr. Nicos Rolandis, the former Foreign Minister of Cyprus, Dr. Christos A. Theodoulou, the President of the United Nations Association of Cyprus and Vice-President of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) and Mr.\u202fChristophoros Yiangou, formerly a Cypriot ambassador representing\u202fCyprus abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the draft resolution on Protection of migrants<\/em>, Dr. Christos A. Theodoulou, quoting the Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, stated,<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c<\/em>International Law has stipulated the right of refugees to protection and asylum. States must judicially examine the applications for asylum. It is not only a matter of international law, it is also our duty as human beings. \u2026<\/em> In addition to upholding responsibilities, the international community must also show greater determination in resolving conflicts and other problems that leave people little choice but to flee.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The students were each representing a UN country and their speeches addressed the draft resolution. Preparation for the MUN, entailed research of foreign countries for the student representatives, including the history and political views with regard to the subject of the draft resolution. The focus was of this MUN was the seriousness of the refugee crisis and the measures that should be taken both locally and globally, in order to address it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Following the speeches, the student representatives were given the opportunity to propose amendments and then vote for the amendments and the resolution as a whole. The conference was concluded with a pleasant reception where the students had the opportunity to discuss the MUN proceedings among themselves, as well as speak to the guests, exchange views and
